“Into the hushed quiet of Canterbury cathedral comes
an anonymous letter, accusing a local cleric of adultery. What is more, his
partner in sin is said to be a woman deacon. The diocesan secretary, Richard
Harrison, is asked to investigate the source of the letter, but before he can
do so, the accused vicar is found savagely murdered, the apparent victim of
his unstable son. The case is quickly considered settled but, for Harrison,
there are too many anomalies. Like Trollope, the author realizes that the placid
shoals of clerical life swarm with tiger sharks. His hero, beginning to suspect
that the crimes were caused by greed, offers himself as bait to the killer and
manages to land him.”
